Ficza fixes it at home in the ETCC

Hungarian hero Ferenc Ficza scored an emotional home victory in the FIA European Touring Car Cup after snatching the lead on the final lap of a dramatic first race at the Hungaroring.

Georgia’s Davit Kajaia had seemed set for victory after rocketing up from sixth on the grid to take the lead just before the halfway point. But the Engstler BMW driver ran wide under pressure from Ficza and dropped to second.

Petr Fulin, who finished third, got past polesitter Dušan Borković after the rolling start, but the Serbian regained the lead a few laps later following contact between the pair. That promoted Mato Homolo into the lead but he ended up being punted off the track, which earned Borković a drive-through penalty and dropped him to 11th overall before he fought back to fifth by the finish.

Despite his final-lap woe, Kajaia won the TC2T category, Michal Matejovský claimed TC2 honours with Niklas Mackschin taking the Super 1600 win. Ficza scored Single Make Trophy success.
