Race 1 flash: Fulín wins sizzling Sicilian ETCC opener

Petr Fulín has won the opening FIA ETCC Race of Italy to keep his Single Make Trophy title hopes alive following a dramatic 11-lap counter shown live on Eurosport.

Title contender Mato Homola retired on the formation lap with a suspected mechanical fault before Dušan Borković crashed out of the lead in spectacular fashion exiting turn three on lap two, as Franz Engstler spun out of the TC2T category lead at turn two.

Borković managed to limp back to the pits but his badly damaged SEAT will require extensive repairs in order for him to start the second race, which could potentially decide the ETCC Single Make Trophy title with Fulín having provisionally narrowed Borković’s lead to 13 points. Homola can no longer win the title following his exit.

Engstler’s moment handed what was third place to team-mate Davit Kajaia. However, when Andreas Pfister slowed a few laps later, Kajaia moved into second with Ronny Jost inheriting third before Engstler battled back to snatch the final outright podium spot and second in TC2T behind Kajaia, who claims the class title, the first driver from Georgia to win an FIA crown, subject to confirmation of the final results.

Peter Rikli won TC2 ahead of new provisional champion Michal Matĕjovský with Niklas Mackschin securing the Super 1600 title behind class winner and fellow Ford Fiesta driver Gilles Bruckner after Ulrike Krafft retired on lap one after a clash with Florian Hildner at the first turn.

Race two is due to begin from a standing start at 13h00 local time. All the action will be shown live on Eurosport.
